The accused officer has been identified as ASI Chandramohan Singh, who was posted at a police picket established in Balirajgarh. According to preliminary accounts reported by IANS, the ASI allegedly entered the house of a local resident late at night; when a neighbour noticed his presence, she reportedly bolted the door from outside and raised an alarm, and villagers gathered and surrounded the house. The ASI allegedly pulled out his service pistol and fired several rounds to escape the gathering, hitting four villagers. Madhubani SSP Yogendra Kumar said the officer had allegedly developed an illicit relationship with a woman in the village and regularly visited her residence, and that he allegedly fired three to four rounds. The exact sequence of events is being investigated, and all allegations remain to be tested in the inquiry and in court.

The accused ASI has been suspended with immediate effect. Police are registering an FIR including charges of murder, and two special teams have been constituted to arrest him; he has been absconding since the firing, IANS reported. The Daily Jagran, reporting the SSP's account, said a Dial 112 response team reached the spot and the four gunshot victims were taken to hospital by police vehicle. The Madhubani SSP has been stationed at Babubarhi police station since the incident, and senior officials visited the hospital and inspected the scene.

The police picket at Balirajgarh was established in May 2026 following complaints of disturbances and theft of archaeological artefacts at the local excavation site, with an ASI, three Special Auxiliary Police Force personnel and two watchmen deployed, IANS reported. The incident has also brought the officer's previous service record under scrutiny: he was earlier posted at Madhavapur police station and was allegedly involved in another firing incident in Benipatti a few months ago, in which a motorcyclist died during an attempt to stop his vehicle; the ASI and a Dial 112 vehicle driver were suspended after that incident, according to IANS. The village remains tense. Ashok Yadav ran a paan shop in Bengaluru and was due to marry off his daughter on December 14, the report said.
