Patna: The Janata Dal (United) on Monday formally asked the Bihar Assembly Speaker to terminate the Assembly membership of its expelled Mokama MLA Anant Singh, escalating a party feud into a fight over his seat itself.

JD(U) state president Umesh Kushwaha met Speaker Dr Prem Kumar and submitted a recommendation letter along with a dossier of around 10 pages containing documentary evidence and video footage, according to Patna Press and the news agency IANS. The Speaker will examine the recommendation and the supporting material before deciding on any further action under the applicable rules.

The party alleges that Anant Singh campaigned against its official candidate Neeraj Kumar in the recent Bihar Legislative Council election for the Patna Graduates constituency and instead openly supported Anuj Singh, the Jan Suraaj-backed candidate, in areas including Patna, Nalanda and Nawada. These are the party's allegations; Anant Singh's response to the disqualification move has not been reported yet.

The move follows the JD(U)'s decision on Saturday to expel Anant Singh and his wife, former MLA Neelam Devi, from the party for six years over alleged anti-party activities, cancelling their primary membership with immediate effect.

Wife loses committee post, told to vacate official residence

On Monday morning, Neelam Devi was removed as a member of the state's 20-Point Programme Implementation Committee and her minister-of-state status was revoked, IANS reported. Separately, the state Building Construction Department has directed her to vacate the government residence at 1, Mall Road, Patna, by November 25, 2026.

Expulsion from a party does not by itself end a legislator's Assembly membership. As IANS noted, any disqualification would require consideration by the competent authority under the prescribed procedure, and the Speaker's decision is now awaited. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, meanwhile, has ruled out Anant Singh returning to the RJD, saying there is no proposal for it.
