His accomplices fled the scene, police said, and raids are under way to trace them. Police said a weapon was recovered from the spot, and the Vaishali Superintendent of Police confirmed the encounter and visited the scene.

Police say Kumar had been active in Vaishali and Samastipur districts for a long time and faces more than a dozen serious cases, including robbery and charges under the Arms Act. Police also name him as the main accused in the Anil Jewellers robbery case in Samastipur. These are police allegations against an accused person and remain to be tested in court.

Reporting on the encounter also said Kumar had escaped from police custody in 2025 while being taken to court, and that police had been looking for him since then. Further investigation is under way, police said.
