New Delhi: A Delhi Police constable posted with the North Delhi Cyber Cell, Moin Ali, was arrested on Sunday by Kotwali police along with an accomplice in connection with an alleged abduction and extortion case, an official said, according to IANS. Ali has been placed under suspension, and a city court has sent the accused to judicial custody. Police said Ali was caught through technical intelligence in the abduction case registered by Kotwali police.
According to reports, the victim was Ravi, a watch seller in the Ghadi Market area near the Red Fort and Jama Masjid. Reports allege — and Awaaz Punjab stresses that these are allegations, not proven facts — that Ali, his childhood friend Sonu and an associate named Akhtar targeted the shopkeeper after recent strong sales at his shop, lured him towards a car and abducted him. A ransom demand reportedly began at Rs 5 lakh (yaani Rs 5,00,000) and was negotiated down to about Rs 1.5 lakh (yaani Rs 1,50,000).
According to reports, a friend of the victim alerted police on the emergency number instead of paying the money. Police laid a trap near New Delhi Railway Station, where Ali and an associate were arrested while allegedly coming to collect the money. The victim had already been released unharmed and reached home safely, reports said, and police were looking for additional suspects in the case.
Ali is reported to be 29 years old, from Budhana in Uttar Pradesh, and from the 2024 batch of recruits. Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar has repeatedly stressed people-friendly policing and zero tolerance for misconduct, with the mantra 'People First. Policing with Trust. Delhi Safer Together.' The investigation is ongoing.
