Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh of the Rouse Avenue Courts heard the plea on Tuesday, sought the police response and directed the investigating officer to appear with the case file on November 5, when the plea will be considered. Additional Public Prosecutor Manish Rawat appeared for the Delhi Police and accepted the notice, news agency ANI reported, adding that the court also directed the police to place on record the complaint filed by the students against Akoijam.

Transit bail, and a stay on his dismissal a day earlier

Akoijam's counsel told the court that he had received transit anticipatory bail from a court in Manipur, which the Patiala House Court extended on October 29, Bar and Bench reported. His counsel also submitted that the matter began as a complaint to the Dean by a group of students and not as a direct complaint by an aggrieved woman, ANI reported — a submission the police reply is expected to address. Akoijam has denied the allegations, LiveLaw reported.

The hearing came a day after the Delhi High Court, on Monday, stayed JNU's order terminating Akoijam's services and listed that matter for a further hearing in January 2027. JNU dismissed him with immediate effect on October 9, after its Internal Complaints Committee inquired into the allegations and recommended disciplinary action, according to the termination order signed by Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit.

The FIR and the allegations

Delhi Police registered an FIR against Akoijam on October 12 at Vasant Kunj North police station, for offences of sexual harassment under Section 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bar and Bench reported. The FIR was lodged on a complaint and documents submitted by JNU's chief security officer. According to reports, at least 11 students filed sexual harassment complaints against Akoijam in May, alleging that he invited them to his campus residence under the pretext of meetings or gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them — allegations that remain unproven and are contested by Akoijam. He represents the Inner Manipur constituency in the Lok Sabha and was a professor at JNU's School of Social Sciences. What happens next: the Rouse Avenue Court will hear the anticipatory bail plea on November 5, with the police reply and the case file before it.
