According to police records cited in reports, Hussain called the police control room on the night of October 4 to report that he had been attacked after refusing to accept a damaged ten-rupee note during a delivery. In a video statement recorded during the initial investigation, he said the customer took about 15 minutes to arrange the payment and, when he declined the torn note, told him to take it or leave it. He alleged that when he suggested cancelling the order, the customer abused him and a second man slapped him several times.

Authorities were later informed that Hussain had consumed a poisonous substance. He was taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital on October 5, a medico-legal case was initiated, and an FIR was registered at the Kalyanpuri police station, reports said.

Hussain died on October 20. Following his death, police updated the charges to include Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with abetment of suicide, and arrested Rakesh, also known as Bunti, 30, and Rampal Singh, 65. The arrests and the added charge were also reported by Hindustan Times.
