Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani passed the interim order after Akoijam told the Court that no notice was issued to him before the decision was taken. The Court also issued notice to JNU on Akoijam's plea challenging his termination, and the case will be heard next in January 2027.

Akoijam, who represents Inner Manipur in the Lok Sabha, was dismissed from JNU with immediate effect on October 9, following an inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment. He had been associated with JNU's Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the School of Social Sciences. The dismissal order was signed by JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit after considering the Internal Committee's report, according to reports of the October decision.

The allegations against Akoijam remain allegations at this stage. He has denied them and had earlier said he would challenge the university's action in court, describing the proceedings as politically motivated. The Delhi Police has registered an FIR against him in connection with the allegations, and that investigation is underway.
Monday's stay is an interim order on the service termination only; it is not a final judicial determination on the underlying allegations, which remain subject to further legal proceedings. The matter is listed next in January 2027.
