The case traces back to an FIR registered at DBG Road police station on October 23, 2025, over a robbery of approximately Rs 18.84 lakh. During that investigation, police say they found that Khan was allegedly running the Irani Gang as an organised syndicate involved in robbery, cheating and other serious offences across several states for pecuniary gain, with members allegedly assigned specific roles such as arranging vehicles and logistics, handling crime proceeds and disposing of stolen jewellery across state lines.

After scrutiny of the accused men's criminal records and earlier chargesheets, approval under Section 23(1)(a) of MCOCA was obtained from the competent authority, and a fresh FIR under MCOCA was registered at DBG Road police station on June 12, 2026. In August 2026, in an earlier development in the same case, two key members of the alleged syndicate were arrested and booked under MCOCA, as reported at the time.

Police said Khan has approximately 42 previous criminal involvements across Delhi, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and other states. His associate Ali Chunna, also known as Raja, was arrested on August 10, 2026 and has reportedly been involved in 10 previous criminal cases, while Akbar Ali, also known as Kabir, was arrested on August 22, 2026 and has been linked to more than 20 earlier cases, officials said. Confessional statements of Khan and Ali Chunna were recorded under Section 18 of MCOCA in accordance with the prescribed legal procedure, police added.
