The Delhi Police on Thursday lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against unknown persons in connection with alleged vandalism and damage to property at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), officials told IANS. The case has been registered at Jamia Nagar Police Station on the complaint of the university administration.

This is the second FIR registered in connection with the ongoing students' protests at the university in recent days. Earlier, Delhi Police registered an FIR at the same police station against Congress MPs Imran Pratapgarhi and Imran Masood and Samajwadi Party MP Mohibbullah Nadvi, following a complaint by JMI registrar Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, who alleged that the MPs entered the campus without authorisation on separate occasions amid the agitation.

What the university alleges

The university said it was in deep shock and concern over the incidents of Tuesday night, which it said involved vandalism and damage to university property, and that its proctorial team and faculty members reached the spot on receiving reports of attacks on the campus. Coverage of the police action reported allegations of damage to gates, boundary walls and CCTV infrastructure; those allegations remain subject to investigation, and no accused person has been named in the new FIR.

Students of the university have been staging a hunger strike since October 12, demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union — dissolved in 2006 — and the removal of the university's Chief Proctor over an alleged crackdown on protesters. Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday condemned the vandalism and said a seven-member high-level committee of senior deans and professors had been constituted to examine the students' grievances, PTI reported.

Classes and exams move online

Jamia has extended online classes until November 24, citing safety concerns after the alleged campus vandalism and security breaches, and end-semester exams will also be held online from December 1 to 24, according to reports of the university's decision.
