The Indian Witness also reported the firing at the home of Sahil Jain, also known as 'Google', and said police identified him as a bookie who had allegedly been threatened in the past. It said investigators were examining the circumstances of the shooting to establish who was responsible and what may have motivated the attack.

Claim being verified

Police are verifying a social-media post said to be from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang claiming responsibility for the firing. The claim has not been established, and no direct link between the alleged 2021 threat and Wednesday's firing has been confirmed.

Investigators are treating extortion as a possible motive. According to the reports, Jain returned from Dubai in July, and police are also examining an alleged threat he received from Lawrence Bishnoi in 2021, when an audio clip said to feature the gangster threatening Jain circulated widely. Police have said a direct connection between that earlier episode and the latest firing has not been established.

Police say the attack fits a recent pattern of motorcycle-borne shootings in Delhi. No arrest had been announced in the reports, and the investigation is continuing.
