RIYADH, November 3 — Asia's biggest football tournament will not be played this winter. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) confirmed on Tuesday that the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027, originally scheduled from January 7 to February 5, 2027, has been postponed by almost a year and will now take place from December 23, 2027 to January 21, 2028.

The decision followed extensive discussions and close consultation with the Local Organising Committee of the tournament and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), the AFC said. The organising committee approved the rescheduling, in the AFC's words, 'in light of the current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region, including substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions'.

Why the AFC acted: a host country under missile and drone attack

The AFC did not name the wars in its statement, but the background is the conflict that has spread across the region since the US-Israeli war on Iran began in late February. Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement has repeatedly targeted Saudi infrastructure, including airports, since hostilities resumed, and a number of sports events in Saudi Arabia have been cancelled or postponed in recent weeks following Houthi attacks, according to reports of the decision. Yemen's civil war reignited in July following a years-long truce between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen's internationally recognised government.

Saudi Arabia's suitability to host the tournament had been a live question for a month, since an October attack on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport — an attack Sportcal reported killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 300. AAP reported the postponement came after a month of speculation following that airport attack. The AFC said the new dates would be presented to FIFA for approval, and stressed that the change was made 'in the interest of all participating teams, officials, spectators and other stakeholders'.

A first Asian Cup for Saudi Arabia — and a rehearsal for 2034

Saudi Arabia will host the Asian Cup for the first time, in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar, and the 24-team tournament is a key test ahead of the kingdom's hosting of the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The AFC said it would continue to liaise with the local organising committee, the SAFF, participating teams, commercial sponsors and broadcasters to deliver the rescheduled event. The December–January window falls in one of the busiest periods of the European club season, AAP noted, which could complicate player release for Asian stars based in Europe — one reason FIFA's sign-off is still required.

What it means for fans and workers in the Gulf

The Gulf's huge South Asian workforce — including lakhs of Punjabi and Indian workers in Saudi Arabia — forms a large part of the football audience in the kingdom, and many had expected to attend or work around a January tournament. For now, those plans are on hold for eleven months: travel into the region remains disrupted, flights have been repeatedly suspended and re-routed since February, and the AFC's decision is the clearest sign yet that Asia's football authorities do not expect normal conditions in the Gulf by January.

What happens next

The new schedule goes to FIFA for approval. The AFC and Saudi organisers must then rebuild ticketing, team preparations and broadcast plans around a Christmas–New Year tournament. Whether the December 2027 dates hold will depend on the region's wars — the same condition that forced this postponement.
