A 19-year-old woman has died in hospital five days after masked gunmen opened fire into a crowd outside a pub in Brisbane's south, Queensland Police said on Thursday, turning the case into a homicide investigation. Vana-Reese Schuster-Togiatau, from Jimboomba, was hit in the head and neck outside Fitzy's Loganholme on Saturday night and died at the Princess Alexandra Hospital on Thursday morning.

The pub was hosting a boxing event that night. According to The Guardian's report of the police briefing, a car pulled into the venue's drop-off zone during an intermission and its occupants opened fire, spraying about a dozen shots into the crowd. Three men, aged 27, 37 and 38, were also shot and taken to hospital; one is recovering from surgery and the other two have been released.

Detective Inspector Ian Galpin said about 80 police officers are working on the murder investigation. He said detectives are keeping all lines of inquiry open — including whether Ms Schuster-Togiatau was a targeted victim and whether gangs were involved — and that it is not yet known whether those responsible were known to the victims.

"We will not stop until these people are identified and taken into custody," Det Insp Galpin told reporters, appealing to people who know who was involved to come forward. He said the young woman had simply been out for a night with friends, described her death as "the most cowardly way" a life could be taken, and said her family was "not doing well" and had asked for privacy.

Police have not announced any arrests. IANS, reporting Xinhua, also confirmed on Thursday that the teenager died in hospital on Thursday morning and that the incident is now the subject of a homicide investigation, with gang involvement not ruled out.
