BAGHDAD - A drone was shot down near Baghdad's fortified Green Zone on Tuesday, and the interception caused the loud sound heard across parts of the Iraqi capital, Iraq's Security Media Cell said in a statement reported by Reuters.

Two Iraqi security sources told Reuters that the US embassy's air defence systems were activated after detecting two drones approaching the perimeter of the Green Zone, and shot them down. The sources said debris from the two drones was recovered at two locations, where security forces were carrying out further investigations into their origin and destination.
No casualties were reported in the Reuters report, and no group had claimed responsibility for the drones. Reuters did not attribute the drones to any country or armed group, and their origin remained under investigation by Iraqi security forces.
Why the Green Zone matters
The Green Zone houses Iraqi government buildings and foreign missions, including the US embassy. Reuters noted the embassy has come under rocket and drone attacks since US and Israeli strikes on Iran, as the wider Iran war has repeatedly spilled into Iraq, where Iran-aligned armed groups operate.
The incident adds to a run of spillover episodes around US positions in Iraq since the war began, and it came as fighting and threats widened elsewhere in the region this week, including Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and renewed warnings around Yemen's Aden airport.
