Four carriages including the engine of the Chattogram-to-Dhaka Karnaphuli Commuter train derailed on Wednesday near Naoti station in Cumilla, Bangladesh Railway said in a press release reported by TOB News. The accident occurred at about 12:30pm at kilometre point 122/7–8 on the Nangalkot–Laksam section. Bangladesh Railway said no passengers were killed or injured in its press release, while The Business Standard's earlier reporting said several passengers suffered minor injuries while getting off the train — the two accounts differ on injuries and Awaaz Punjab reports both as attributed.
Bangladesh Railway said repair work was under way at the site after a section of track had been removed without informing the control room, TOB News reported. Neither the station master nor the train driver was aware of the ongoing repairs, the railway said, and the driver could not prevent the derailment despite applying the emergency brakes. The Business Standard reported loco master Moazzem Hossain said he had received clearance with no caution order and saw a red warning flag about 100 metres ahead, and Nangalkot station master Jamal Hossain said he too had received no information about the repairs. The Daily Commercial Times independently confirmed three coaches derailed in Laksham, Cumilla, disrupting Dhaka–Chattogram rail communication, with the down line suspended in its reporting.
Train services on the up line were halted while the down line remained normal, TOB News reported, and a rescue train from Chattogram began recovery operations, with Bangladesh Railway expecting recovery to be completed by 9pm Wednesday. A four-member investigation committee was formed at divisional level, and an order was issued to temporarily suspend the assistant sub-engineer concerned over alleged negligence of duty, TOB News reported, citing the railway press release; Bangladesh Railway said it initially suspected a lack of coordination during track repairs caused the derailment and expressed regret for the inconvenience.
