The BBC will close BBC Three, BBC Scotland and BBC Radio 4 Extra as linear broadcast services in spring 2027 as part of cost-cutting measures, the broadcaster announced on Tuesday, PA Media reported. Content from the affected channels will remain available through digital platforms: BBC Scotland will remain a channel on iPlayer, with content also shown on BBC One and BBC Two in Scotland, BBC Three content will be available on iPlayer and other platforms including YouTube, and programmes from Radio 4 Extra will still be available on BBC Sounds. It is not the first time BBC Three has been cut from linear TV — it returned as a fully-fledged TV channel in January 2022, six years after it moved online, and has been responsible for hits including Fleabag, Normal People and Killing Eve, PA reported.

Around 100 jobs will also be cut at BBC News. TheDesk, reporting the same internal announcements in detail, said BBC News will eliminate more than 100 positions over the coming months, generating approximately £5.5 million (US$7.4 million) in annual savings, and that BBC News director Rachel Jupp disclosed the reductions in an internal message to employees on Tuesday. 'I know this will be very difficult news for those affected,' Jupp wrote, adding that the broadcaster would consult with employees and labour unions to minimise compulsory layoffs, TheDesk reported. A number of roles will also be cut as a result of the broadcast closures, including ten in Scotland, PA reported. Scotland's Culture Minister Mairi McAllan described the BBC Scotland move as 'wholly unacceptable,' NewscastStudio reported.

The cuts sit inside a much larger target. The corporation faces pressure to make savings of £500 million by 2028 — yaani £50 crore (US$668–670 million) — and, according to TheDesk, BBC News alone must contribute at least £51 million toward that target, has identified about £30.5 million so far and still has at least another £20 million to find, with further restructuring proposals expected in early 2027; NewscastStudio reported the wider restructuring could eliminate as many as 2,000 jobs across the BBC. Director-General Matt Brittin told staff: 'We need to make every pound work harder for audiences as we respond to the immediate cost pressures and reinvent the BBC for a changing world. We all know that means tough choices.' For Punjabi and Indian audiences in Britain — among the BBC's largest diaspora audiences — the shift matters because BBC Three, BBC Scotland and the BBC's Asian and world programming are steadily moving from broadcast schedules to streaming-first release.
