Brazil's government is awaiting an assessment by its embassy in Asuncion of documents concerning Paraguay's recent agreements with the United States before issuing an official statement on the matter, according to Brazilian news website Brasil 247, in a report carried by ANI on Sunday.

The agreements reportedly concern US access to energy resources associated with the Paraguayan side of the Itaipu Binacional hydroelectric plant, with the electricity intended to support artificial intelligence infrastructure in US projects, ANI reported, citing Brasil 247.

The underlying US-Paraguay project was formalised earlier this week. The US government formalised its backing for an AI infrastructure partnership between US-based Crusoe and Paraguay's Araico, centred on a planned US$12 billion AI data centre complex powered by hydropower from the Itaipu dam, BNamericas reported. Yaani: US$12 billion means about 1,200 crore dollars of planned investment.

The US State Department listed the partnership among the outcomes of Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau's October 19-21 trip to Paraguay, where he met President Santiago Pena and Foreign Minister Ruben Ramirez Lezcano, and described it as potentially one of the largest private investments in Paraguay's history, with an initial deployment planned for mid-2027, according to BNamericas.

Itaipu is jointly operated by Brazil and Paraguay, which have equal rights to the energy it produces, and the US State Department's statement on the agreement did not mention Brazil, Canal Solar noted. That omission helps explain why Brasilia is studying the documents before reacting publicly.

According to Brasil 247, a source at Brazil's Presidential Palace said the government was waiting for the embassy's evaluation before determining its official position, ANI reported. The same report said the Palace source expressed discomfort over some South American leaders posing enthusiastically for photographs alongside Landau, whom the source characterised as relatively junior within the Trump administration — a characterisation reported by Brasil 247, not independently verified.

Landau's visit formed part of a diplomatic tour of South American countries including Paraguay and Argentina, as Washington seeks to strengthen regional ties, ANI reported. Brazil has not yet issued an official statement on the agreements.
