Typhoon Champi continued to hit China's eastern coast on Saturday, grounding more than a hundred flights and prompting the relocation of tens of thousands of people, while weakening as it moved towards Japan, AviNews reported, citing Chinese state broadcaster CCTV and the China National Meteorological Centre. Flights from airports in Shanghai and in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces were grounded.

Shanghai authorities evacuated about 62,400 people ahead of the storm's arrival on Friday, according to CCTV. China Eastern Airlines said it cancelled 39 domestic flights to and from Shanghai's two main airports, and flights to and from Fuzhou and Wenzhou were also affected; the Zhejiang cities of Ningbo and Wenzhou announced the cancellation of 37 and 44 flights respectively on Saturday, AviNews said.

AFP reported the same coastal preparations: authorities in China warned of "strong winds and heavy rain" as Champi approached the country's east coast, some train services were suspended and tens of thousands of people were evacuated from their homes in Shanghai, with CCTV saying parts of Jiangsu, Shanghai and Zhejiang could see heavy to torrential rainfall. China's National Meteorological Centre kept a blue typhoon warning — the lowest level in the country's four-tier system — in place on Saturday morning for the fifth straight day, and the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters and the Ministry of Emergency Management activated a level-four emergency response, the lowest of four levels, for flood and typhoon control in Jiangsu province on Friday.

China also sent a working group to Zhejiang province, with 400 rescue workers and 600 sets of equipment ready and more than 41,000 firefighters on standby, Pollar News reported, summarising Chinese official statements. The meteorological centre urged offshore workers and ships to return to port and warned coastal residents to stay away from beaches, as strong winds were expected over the southeastern waters and along the eastern coast from October 23 to 26.

In Japan, dozens of flights were cancelled in Okinawa and Kagoshima prefectures and two people were reported injured in Okinawa, AFP said, citing the Japanese government; tourists on Ishigaki Island waited for flights to resume so they could return home. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the system could reach Kyushu on Monday, October 26, after losing strength, according to Pollar News. The storm was expected to turn northeast along the waters off Zhejiang and head towards southwestern Japan, though it may stay close to the mainland's east coast on Sunday, AviNews said.

Champi reached China's coast after sweeping past Taiwan early on Saturday, where Taiwan's fire department said one man was swept away by waves from the island of Liuqiu and 527 people were injured, Reuters reported. More than 288,000 homes lost electricity at the storm's peak, most of them later reconnected, and Taiwan's transport ministry said 259 flights were cancelled on Saturday. At one point a super typhoon and one of the strongest storms in the Pacific this year, Champi was weakening on Saturday though still packing gusts of around 126 kph (78 mph) near its centre, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration, Reuters said.
