Israeli strikes and gunfire killed at least four people in the Gaza Strip in separate incidents on Thursday, health officials in the enclave said, according to Reuters.

In Gaza City, a strike on a car killed at least one person, medics said. Other strikes killed a man on a bicycle in the southern city of Khan Younis and a man near the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, and gunfire killed a woman near the Jabalia refugee camp in the north, the medics added, Reuters reported. Al Jazeera, citing the Palestinian news agency Wafa and its reporter in Gaza City, reported the same four deaths across the enclave in the past 24 hours.

What each side says

Israel's military said it had struck Hamas militants in Khan Younis, Nuseirat and Gaza City, but that it was not aware of the reported incident in Jabalia, Reuters reported. Israel says the Hamas militant group has been rearming and launching attacks in violation of a year-old ceasefire, and says it has stepped up strikes on the group in recent weeks.

Hamas has denied trying to carry out attacks or rebuild its arsenal and accuses Israel of undermining the Gaza peace deal, Reuters reported.

The toll since the ceasefire

At least 1,500 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since last year's US-brokered ceasefire took effect, according to the territory's health officials, cited by Reuters; Al Jazeera, citing the Gaza Health Ministry, put the figure at 1,538 killed and 5,498 injured since the ceasefire. Palestinian authorities say more than 74,000 people have been killed in Israel's assault on Gaza since October 2023, while Israel says four of its soldiers have been killed since the ceasefire.

Al Jazeera reported that the Israeli military continues to expand its control inside Gaza, that close to two million people live in what remains of the territory, and that its maps show nearly two-thirds of Gaza under Israeli military control or subject to access restrictions. A rights group warned that Gaza could face another famine as Israeli restrictions on incoming goods leave residents struggling to obtain food, Al Jazeera reported — a warning presented here as that group's assessment.

What is solid

  • Health officials in Gaza reported at least four people killed in separate incidents on Thursday, in Gaza City, Khan Younis, near Nuseirat and near Jabalia (Reuters and Al Jazeera).
  • Israel's military said it struck Hamas militants in Khan Younis, Nuseirat and Gaza City, and said it was not aware of the reported Jabalia incident (Reuters).
  • More than 1,500 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire took effect, according to Gaza health officials cited by both outlets.

What is only claimed

  • Israel says Hamas has been rearming and launching attacks in violation of the ceasefire; Hamas denies rearming or trying to carry out attacks and accuses Israel of undermining the peace deal.
  • A rights group's warning that Gaza could face another famine is an assessment reported by Al Jazeera, not a formal famine declaration.
