Israeli fire killed three people in Gaza on Thursday — one person in a car in Gaza City's Tel Al-Hawa neighbourhood and at least two others elsewhere in the enclave — health officials in Gaza said, Reuters reported from Cairo.

Medics said another strike killed a Palestinian man on a bike in the southern city of Khan Younis, and gunfire killed a woman near the Jabalia refugee camp in the north. A crowd gathered around the burning wreckage in Tel Al-Hawa as emergency workers sprayed it with water, photos from the scene showed, Reuters said.

The Israeli military said it had struck a Hamas militant in Khan Younis, without giving further details, and added it was still checking reports of the strikes in Jabalia and Tel Al-Hawa, Reuters reported.

Ceasefire under strain, both sides accuse the other

Israel says Hamas has been rearming and launching attacks in violation of a year-old ceasefire, and has stepped up strikes in recent weeks. Hamas has denied trying to carry out attacks or rebuild its arsenal and accuses Israel of undermining the Gaza peace deal — both claims are the sides' own and are reported here as attributed claims, not settled fact.

Last year's US-brokered ceasefire calls for eventual reconstruction of the territory, but little progress has been made as negotiators have failed to agree terms for Hamas to disarm and Israel to withdraw its troops, Reuters said.

At least 1,500 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire, according to the territory's health officials, while Israel says four soldiers have been killed. Palestinian authorities say more than 74,000 people have been killed in Israel's assault on Gaza, launched after Hamas-led fighters killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, Reuters reported.

What is solid

  • Israeli fire killed three people in Gaza on Thursday in Gaza City, Khan Younis and near Jabalia, Gaza health officials said (Reuters).
  • The Israeli military said it struck a Hamas militant in Khan Younis and was checking the other two reports (Reuters).

What is only claimed

  • Why each target was struck and whether those killed were militants or civilians — Israel and Hamas give conflicting accounts, and neither side's claim is independently verified in the reports.
