The fire alarm at the building on the Obersalzberg near Berchtesgaden was triggered at about 9:15 p.m. local time on Friday, and the first emergency crews who reached the mountaintop site at 9:52 p.m. found a major blaze, the Upper Bavaria South police headquarters said, according to dpa. Flames were already clearly visible as fire crews approached.

Around 200 firefighters and emergency personnel were battling the flames around Berchtesgaden in southern Bavaria, Reuters said. Access for fire engines was difficult because of the building's location at about 1,834 metres, and the building and its immediate surroundings could only be entered with heavy breathing apparatus, dpa reported.

Police said they did not believe anyone was inside the building when the fire broke out and were not aware of any injuries, according to dpa. A suspicious person was detained close to the scene shortly after the fire started, and investigators are still examining whether that person is connected to the fire, police said. There was no immediate word on a possible motive, Reuters reported.

Built in 1938 as a guest house for Nazi officials and their guests, the Kehlsteinhaus sits in a spectacular Alpine setting and is separate from Hitler's nearby summer residence, the Berghof, Reuters said. Now owned by the state of Bavaria, it was classified after the war as a historical monument recalling the Nazi period and has long operated as a mountain restaurant and tourist destination. According to the Berchtesgaden tourism association's website cited by dpa, it was due to stay open this season until November 8.
