HEBRON — For the fourth consecutive day, Israeli forces have continued their military campaign in Hebron Governorate in the southern occupied West Bank, escalating incursions, deploying military reinforcements, imposing closures and seizing Palestinian-owned vehicles, the Jordanian news agency Petra reported on Monday.

According to the Support and Relief Committee in Hebron, the number of Palestinians displaced from the city has risen to approximately 3,043. In a statement issued Monday, Hebron Governor Khaled Dudin reported that 450 families had been forcibly displaced, with more than 3,043 Palestinians uprooted from the areas of Deir Bahha and al-Jalda, that forces had searched more than 500 homes, and that the governorate had been fragmented by 128 closed gates and 120 military checkpoints, Petra reported.

The Hebron Municipality reported that additional forces, accompanied by armoured military vehicles, entered the city late Sunday night through the Farsh al-Hawa entrance, while forces raided the southern area near Jabal Karbaj and large trucks arrived in the al-Jalda area. The municipality added that forces had divided a street in the Jabal al-Rahma neighbourhood into sections designated separately for Palestinians and settlers, severely restricting residents' movement, and raided homes in the Jabal al-Ja'bari area, Petra reported.

Governor Dudin said the forces had destroyed the contents of homes, established field interrogation centres and arrested 71 local residents, and accused them of opening fire on civilian vehicles — allegations made by the Palestinian governor in his Monday statement, as reported by Petra; the Israeli military had not responded to those specific allegations in the reports reviewed. In a later Monday report, WAFA said the operation had affected 619 families, with around 3,971 Palestinians displaced, and the Palestinian Prisoner's Society said 85 Palestinians, including a girl, had been detained since the operation began, with over 250 others subjected to field interrogation, WAFA reported.

Launched after two soldiers were killed

The operation was launched after a Friday attack nearby killed two Israeli soldiers; Israeli forces then entered the Ein Deir Baha neighbourhood, where the assailants lived, and ordered residents to leave after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged a major operation, AFP reported. On Sunday, the Palestinian prime minister's office said more than 2,670 Palestinians had been forcibly displaced, according to Hebron Municipality data, the majority of them women, children and elderly people — a figure the Palestinian counts have since risen past, AFP reported.

WAFA also reported that the Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission documented 272 attacks by Israeli forces and settlers in Hebron Governorate during September, including 122 carried out by settlers, and 19 demolition operations targeting 91 structures in the same month. The Follow-up, Support and Relief Committee in Hebron has begun distributing aid and essential supplies to the displaced families, WAFA reported.

What is solid

  • The operation entered its fourth day on Monday, Oct 26, with reinforcements and armoured vehicles entering Hebron late Sunday night via Farsh al-Hawa (Hebron Municipality via Petra)
  • Palestinian official counts agree the displaced total has climbed past Sunday's 2,670 figure (AFP) into the thousands, concentrated in Deir Bahha / Ein Deir Baha and al-Jalda

What is only claimed

  • Exact totals differ by source and by the hour on Monday: 3,043 displaced and 71 arrested (Governor Dudin / Support and Relief Committee via Petra) versus around 3,971 displaced from 619 families and 85 detained (WAFA / Palestinian Prisoner's Society); Governor Dudin's allegations about conduct inside homes are Palestinian officials' claims, with no Israeli military response in the reports reviewed
