More than 2,000 people have been forced from their homes in Hebron amid Israeli raids across the occupied West Bank, Al Jazeera reported on Saturday. Hebron's mayor Yousef al-Ja'bari told Al Jazeera that 2,200 people had been forced from their homes by Israeli troops, and later on Saturday Israel's defence minister Israel Katz confirmed that "about 2,000" people have been displaced.

"They will not be allowed to return to their neighbourhood until we've finished dealing with all the Hamas issues in Hebron," Katz said in an interview with public broadcaster Kan, Al Jazeera reported. The figure is a sharp rise from earlier on Saturday, when Reuters reported that the Israeli military had forced around 1,200 Palestinians to leave their homes in Hebron as the operation began.

The Israeli military carried out raids across at least 15 areas of the occupied West Bank on Saturday, Al Jazeera correspondents reported, including Jenin and Nablus in the north, Ramallah, Al-Bireh, Birzeit and occupied East Jerusalem in the centre, and Bethlehem in the south. Israeli forces have arrested about 70 Palestinians in the raids, the Palestinian Prisoners' Society said, a figure also reported by QNA, which said arrests and field interrogations had swept through hundreds of homes, in particular those of former prisoners.

Al Jazeera said Israeli soldiers fired a stun grenade at its journalists near the Farsh al-Hawa checkpoint in Hebron while they were documenting an operation to bulldoze homes and vehicles. Mayor al-Ja'bari said Hebron residents could neither enter nor leave the city after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a "full lockdown" of the West Bank following Friday's attack by two Palestinian gunmen on an Israeli army reserve base, in which two Israeli soldiers and both gunmen were killed.

The Palestinian Authority, which governs parts of the West Bank, called Israel's actions "collective punishment", citing the demolition of homes, forced displacement of entire neighbourhoods and the closure and siege of Palestinian cities, and urged the international community to intervene, the Palestinian news agency Wafa reported via Al Jazeera. The Brief, summarising Al Jazeera, the Times of Israel and France 24, noted differing early counts of the Hebron displacement — about 1,500 according to the Times of Israel and around 250 families according to France 24 — before the mayor's and the defence minister's higher figures on Saturday.
