TEHRAN — Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has directed the judiciary to pursue compensation for 'material and moral' damages caused by the US-Israeli war, the state news agency IRNA reported. He issued the directive during a meeting with judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, calling on the authorities to pursue the Iranian nation's rights, IRNA said.

A statement published on the leader's website on Saturday said the meeting also covered promoting justice, safeguarding public rights, fighting corruption and its root causes, handling judicial cases promptly, precisely and decisively, and enforcing rulings in a timely way as a deterrent, Xinhua reported via IANS. The statement spoke of the need to 'seriously pursue the restoration of the Iranian people's rights and compensation for the material and non-material damages resulting from the crimes perpetrated by the US-Israeli criminals' — Tehran's characterisation, reported here as its own wording.

The judiciary's Mizan Online website reported the meeting on Saturday, Reuters noted in its coverage of the rare encounter. Mojtaba Khamenei was chosen in March to succeed his father, longtime ruler Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in US-Israeli strikes in central Tehran alongside senior military commanders at the start of the war on February 28, and was said to have been injured in the same attack. The younger Khamenei has yet to appear in public since his appointment and has communicated through written messages; no video message from him has been released, and the time and location of his meeting with Ejei were not disclosed.

The reparations directive arrived on the same weekend Iran's army said its air defences had shot down a US LUCAS drone over Bandar Abbas, and a day after President Trump said Washington could strike Iran as soon as Sunday or reach a major deal. Neither IRNA nor the leader's statement specified a compensation amount, a forum, or a timetable in the reports available at publish time, and there was no immediate US or Israeli response to the directive in the reporting. Legal claims of this kind are typically pursued for years through domestic courts and international bodies, and their practical effect usually depends on assets or negotiations far beyond a court's own jurisdiction — context the reports themselves did not address.
