ROME — Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's email account was among those targeted in a cyberattack on the IT systems of Italy's lower house of parliament in recent days, a source in the assembly said on Tuesday, Reuters reported. The official did not specify whether the prime minister's parliamentary email was accessed, but said there was no security emergency as all necessary protective measures had been activated. Meloni's office said her parliamentary email was not the one used for government communications.

LaPresse reported the same incident independently on Tuesday: the Chamber's IT systems were targeted in recent days by a cyber-attack that also affected some MPs' email accounts, including that of Meloni. Sources at Montecitorio told LaPresse 'this is not an emergency situation and is something that occurs on a daily basis', and said protective measures had been put in place in collaboration with the ACN, with which a specific protocol exists; the measures may also include the temporary deactivation of certain IT system functions, in line with standard practice.

LaPresse added that, over the past few days, similar attack attempts and pressure on IT systems appear to have intensified, targeting other national, European and international institutions as well. Reuters noted that the attack also targeted other lawmakers in the Chamber of Deputies and other institutions, and that cyberattacks have multiplied across Italy and Europe in recent years, targeting governments, infrastructure and companies.

Italian reporting summarising ANSA and Open (citing Corriere della Sera and the Chamber's leadership) described the attack as massive but kept under control by Montecitorio's technicians, and named two further accounts alongside Meloni's: Justice Undersecretary Andrea Delmastro and League deputy Paolo Formentini. The number of mailboxes involved has not been disclosed, and the accounts differ on timing — ANSA spoke of an attack 'in recent days', while Open placed the intrusion overnight.

Why this matters

Every Italian MP receives an institutional Chamber email tied to their role as a deputy; Meloni's targeted address is separate from the Palazzo Chigi mailbox used for government business, which Italian reporting says is protected by tighter state security protocols. Even so, a breach attempt reaching the prime minister's parliamentary inbox — alongside other lawmakers and, reportedly, other European institutions — underlines how routine, high-volume attacks on parliaments have become across Europe.
