Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, writing on Telegram, said one person had been killed near a supermarket, and Ukraine's state rescue services said a body was found by a heavily damaged apartment building. The Kyiv Independent, as reported by Zot News, said explosions were heard around 9:45 pm local time, shortly after Ukraine's Air Force warned ballistic missiles were heading towards Kyiv. It said the missiles struck the university campus, Kyoto Park, the area near a metro station and residential buildings, damaged two medical facilities in the Dniprovskyi district — with blast waves shattering windows in an intensive care unit at one site — and damaged a school building in the Desnyanskyi district. A team of paramedics came under fire during the attack and an ambulance was damaged, the State Emergency Service reported, according to the Kyiv Independent.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, writing on Telegram, gave no precise casualty figures in his first statement: 'For the moment, the number of people is not exactly known. But, unfortunately, there are casualties. There are injured. Rescue operations are continuing.' In a post on X, he said the missiles hit very crowded areas with no military facility nearby, and repeated his call to eliminate delays in securing air-defence arms: 'It is precisely in such conditions, when the threat is constant, when strikes can happen at any moment and on cities and villages, that artificial delays in air defence for Ukraine are helping terror.'

Earlier in the day, Zelenskiy said Ukraine had been waiting nearly a month for US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth to sign off on critical missile supplies: 'In particular, we have been waiting for nearly a month for Mr Hegseth to sign off on missiles for Patriots and NASAMS. I instructed our team to raise this with the American side once again,' the president said on X, Reuters reported. Reuters witnesses in Kyiv said a series of explosions jolted the city and power had been cut in districts on the east side of the Dnipro River. Moscow has long denied that it targets civilians, Reuters noted; there was no Russian comment on this specific strike in the reports.
