Missiles struck Kyiv in the early hours of Thursday, a Reuters witness said, in another attack on Ukraine's capital hours after a Russian evening air strike injured six people and damaged homes, a petrol station and transport equipment. City officials had given no casualty toll for the new overnight wave in the first Reuters report.

In Russia, in the city of Lipetsk — home to a major steel plant some 400 km (250 miles) south of Moscow — a man was injured as drones hit apartment buildings and a medical facility, Governor Igor Artamonov said on the Telegram messaging app, Reuters reported.

The Kyiv Independent, reporting the same Lipetsk attack, said Ukrainian drones struck a multi-storey building and caused multiple explosions around the city, and that Governor Artamonov said the windows and facades of several residential buildings were damaged and a clinic, closed at the time, was also damaged. The Kyiv Independent said it could not independently verify the targets or the extent of the damage at the time of publication.

Overnight exchange — what is confirmed

Kyiv: missiles struck in the early hours of Thursday (Reuters witness); no toll yet reported for this wave. The earlier Wednesday-evening strike injured six, city officials said. Lipetsk: one man injured, flats and a clinic damaged, according to the regional governor.

The strikes came as US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff held talks this week with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Oslo and Russia's President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg to mediate an end to the conflict, which began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Reuters and AAP reported. AAP reported that Zelenskiy is pushing for further talks in November, and that the Kremlin also said China was working to prepare a possible three-way summit involving Putin, US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Both Russia and Ukraine deny deliberately targeting civilians. Claims about specific strikes in this report are attributed to the officials and outlets named above, and casualty figures for the overnight Kyiv wave had not been issued by city officials when this story was queued.
