"Tragically, there have been casualties and hits in Kyiv, including on the South Bridge," Zelenskiy said on X, referring to one of the main road bridges over the Dnipro River that bisects the Ukrainian capital. He gave no casualty figure in that statement, and none is reported here. "A serious escalation in Russia's operation against our logistics," he added.

Bridge and subway hit, traffic suspended

Separately, Kyiv city officials said new strikes on Tuesday hit the Southern Bridge and subway infrastructure in Kyiv, forcing a suspension of traffic, while a Reuters witness in the capital heard explosions, Reuters reported in its coverage of the same night's fighting.

Zelenskiy said there were also strikes on the Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Odesa, Chernihiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Kherson and Chernivtsi regions. The overnight barrage came on the same day Russia and Ukraine began a localised ceasefire around the occupied town of Oleshky in the south to allow a humanitarian operation there — a pause both sides said was holding in that area even as strikes continued elsewhere.
