BEIRUT — Israeli air strikes across southern Lebanon killed at least 10 people on Saturday, taking the toll for the past 24 hours to 41, Lebanon's Ministry of Health said, as Israel issued new displacement orders covering more than 10 villages and towns, including several north of the Litani River.

The ministry said the overall death toll since the Israel-Hezbollah war escalated on March 2 has risen to 2,659, with 8,183 people injured. Quoting the health ministry, Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) said three people were killed in a strike on the town of Shoukine in the Nabatieh district, two were killed when a car was hit in the village of Kfar Dajjal, three were killed when a home was hit in the village of Lwaizeh, and two were killed in a strike on the village of Shoukin.

Israeli forces also carried out an air strike near the al-Quds roundabout in the city of Nabatieh, and warplanes attacked the town of Siddiqine in the Tyre district, NNA reported. An Israeli military spokeswoman, Lt. Col. Ella Waweya, said on X that the air force had carried out around 50 strikes over the past 24 hours, saying they targeted Hezbollah infrastructure and members across southern Lebanon.

In a new warning, the Israeli military's Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee told residents on X: "For your safety, you must evacuate your homes immediately and move away from the villages and towns by at least 1,000 metres into open areas." Al Jazeera reported that the warning covers more than 10 villages and towns, including several in the Nabatieh district north of the Litani River, south of which Israel has stationed troops, and that three of the towns were receiving such orders for the first time — a sign, its Beirut correspondent said, that Israel's area of operations continues to expand.

The strikes continue despite a United States-brokered ceasefire in force since April 17 and later extended. Al Jazeera's Rory Challands, reporting from Beirut, said the ceasefire "exists in name only", adding: "Down south, Israel maintains five divisions of its invading army, and it is bombing and demolishing homes extensively." On Friday, China's envoy to the United Nations, Fu Cong, told reporters in New York there is no real ceasefire in place, only a "lesser fire", and said: "It is incumbent on Israel to stop this bombardment of Lebanon."

Hezbollah said on Friday it would continue attacks on Israeli forces inside Lebanese territory. The group said it had targeted gatherings of Israeli soldiers and vehicles in front-line towns, including artillery strikes near the Moussa Abbas complex in Bint Jbeil and the village of Hula, and drone attacks in Biyyada, Taybeh and Rishaf. Those claims could not be independently verified. Israel says its attacks target the pro-Iran group Hezbollah; Lebanese officials say many of the dead are civilians.

More than one million people in Lebanon have been registered as displaced since the war began, the health ministry figures reported by Al Jazeera show. The latest war began on March 2, when Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel two days after the United States and Israel attacked its main backer, Iran; Israel has since carried out hundreds of air strikes and a ground invasion of the south, capturing dozens of border towns and villages.
