SEOUL — North Korea's state media KCNA reported on Sunday that the country's defence science research institutes tested a major weapon system — a cluster-bomb warhead intended to be tipped on tactical ballistic missiles, Reuters reported from Seoul. The test was intended to "assess adaptation to combat and power of a cluster-bomb warhead to be tipped on tactical ballistic missiles," KCNA said, in the agency's own wording as carried by Reuters.

According to KCNA, the test found that a standard Type 2 cluster bomb warhead can destroy a target area of 12 to 13 hectares at its highest density. Yaani, that is roughly 30 acres of ground — about the area of 17 football pitches — covered by a single warhead scattering submunitions, if Pyongyang's figure is accurate. The figure comes from North Korea's own state media and has not been independently verified.

A show of force that has been building for weeks

KCNA said North Korea will enable its military units by the end of 2026 to use all types of the bombs, depending on their operational purposes. Pyongyang has ramped up its show of force in recent weeks with multiple missile tests and holding a drone exhibition, and analysts cited by Reuters said the tests could be part of efforts to modernise the military. North Korea has also gained experience in modern warfare by sending troops to the war in Ukraine for its ally Moscow, Reuters noted.

On Thursday, North Korea test-fired around 10 ballistic missiles from its east coast toward the sea, on the day German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited South Korea for a summit. The cluster-warhead announcement also lands just two days after the foreign ministers of the United States, Japan and South Korea met in Atlanta on Friday and reaffirmed their commitment to the complete denuclearisation of North Korea and the full implementation of UN Security Council resolutions — a demand Pyongyang has repeatedly rejected.

What is solid

  • KCNA reported the cluster-warhead test on Sunday, as carried by Reuters from Seoul
  • The test's stated purpose, the Type 2 warhead, the 12–13 hectare figure, the four categories and the end-2026 deployment aim are all KCNA's own statements
  • North Korea test-fired around 10 ballistic missiles on Thursday during Chancellor Merz's visit to South Korea

What is only claimed

  • Whether the Type 2 warhead can in fact destroy 12 to 13 hectares — a performance claim by North Korean state media that no independent source has verified
  • What the four warhead categories are — KCNA's missile administration official did not elaborate
