ISLAMABAD — Pakistani security forces launched retaliatory strikes against multiple Afghan Taliban border posts, mortar positions and defensive installations after coming under fire in the Angoor Adda area of South Waziristan, the deputy commissioner of Lower South Waziristan said on Sunday. In a post on X dated November 1, the deputy commissioner said Afghan border posts had continued firing on Pakistani border positions in the area, and that Pakistani forces responded immediately and effectively.

The deputy commissioner said Afghan Taliban personnel were forced to abandon their posts and flee following the strong Pakistani response, the Express Tribune reported. He said no casualties had been reported in the Pakistani border areas so far, and that security forces remained fully prepared to respond to any form of aggression. Radio Pakistan also reported the continued firing at Angoor Adda and the swift Pakistani response, Pakistan TV reported. No response from the Afghan Taliban authorities was carried in the reports checked.

A new exchange, days after a deadly one at the same crossing

This is a fresh exchange at the same crossing, not a repeat of last week's incident. The latest firing comes days after Afghan Taliban forces opened fire on civilian houses and Angoor Adda Bazaar on the night of October 27, when one civilian was killed and five others were injured after a mortar shell struck a house, and several shops were damaged, according to the deputy commissioner and security sources. Pakistani forces then launched a retaliatory operation that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said destroyed seven Afghan Taliban posts.

What is solid

  • The deputy commissioner of Lower South Waziristan posted on X on November 1 that Afghan border posts continued firing on Pakistani positions at Angoor Adda and that Pakistani forces responded, targeting border posts, mortar positions and defensive installations — reported by The News, the Express Tribune, Islamabad Post and Pakistan TV.
  • No casualties were reported in the Pakistani border areas in Sunday's exchange so far, according to the deputy commissioner.

What is only claimed

  • The description of the firing as 'unprovoked' and the claim that Afghan Taliban personnel abandoned their posts and fled are Pakistani official claims; no Afghan Taliban response was carried in the reports checked, so the Afghan side of Sunday's exchange is not yet on record.

What happens next: Angoor Adda is one of the most sensitive crossings on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and a key trade and public-movement route, and Sunday's exchange is the second at the same spot in less than a week. Islamabad has repeatedly urged the Afghan Taliban to stop militant groups, particularly the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), from using Afghan territory to launch attacks inside Pakistan, The News reported — the demand at the heart of the months-long border tension that Qatar- and Turkiye-facilitated talks have so far failed to settle.
