A magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted Zadoi County, Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, in northwest China's Qinghai Province at 4:39 p.m. on Saturday (Beijing time), according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), Xinhua reported. The epicentre, at a depth of 10 km, was monitored at 32.54 degrees north latitude and 93.97 degrees east longitude, the centre said.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) independently recorded a magnitude 5.3 earthquake in China's Tibet region on Saturday at a depth of 10 km, Reuters reported — the same border area of the Tibetan Plateau, which seismologists place across the Qinghai-Tibet boundary near Nagqu. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from Saturday's earthquake, PTI reported.

Saturday's quake came two days after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Baqen County in Nagqu, in the Tibet Autonomous Region, at 10:33 p.m. on Thursday, killing 16 people and injuring 76, PTI reported, citing the continuing rescue operation. The Tibet quake zone has since recorded 834 aftershocks, including eight measuring between 4.0 and 4.9, and 12,489 residents have been evacuated, the report said.

All 76 injured people from Thursday's quake were receiving medical treatment, and five of the 11 people initially classified as seriously injured had improved to mild conditions, according to Xinhua, as cited in the PTI report. More than 52,450 relief items — including tents, prefabricated houses, folding beds and cold-weather supplies — have been dispatched to the Tibet quake zone, with more than 2,500 rescue personnel working across 35 temporary resettlement sites, the report said.

The Tibetan Plateau is prone to powerful earthquakes because it lies where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, PTI noted. CENC gave no casualty or damage assessment for the Zadoi quake in its first report, and authorities in Qinghai had not announced any emergency response specific to Saturday's tremor by the time of publication. What is solid

  • A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck at 4:39 p.m. Beijing time on Saturday at 10 km depth — CENC via Xinhua, corroborated on magnitude and depth by GFZ via Reuters
  • Epicentre coordinates 32.54N, 93.97E in Zadoi County, Yushu, Qinghai — CENC via Xinhua
  • Thursday's magnitude 7.0 Baqen County quake killed 16 and injured 76, with 12,489 evacuated — PTI, citing the rescue operation and Xinhua

What is only claimed

  • Location naming differs by agency: CENC places the epicentre in Zadoi County, Qinghai, while GFZ/Reuters described it as striking China's Tibet region and US-based trackers placed it north-east of Nagqu — the coordinates are in the same Qinghai-Tibet border area
  • No casualties or damage had been reported for Saturday's quake in the first reports — that is an absence of early reports, not a confirmed final assessment
