The attack President Zelenskyy had warned was coming
The barrage came a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia was preparing a massive attack on Ukraine's energy grid while the world watched the US midterm elections. It also followed Monday's Russian strikes on a school used as a humanitarian aid distribution centre in Komyshuvakha, in the Zaporizhzhia region, which Ukrainian officials said killed at least 26 people, including civilians collecting aid, two rescuers and four police officers.

The attack comes a week before US-led peace talks between Ukraine, Russia and the United States are due to resume in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11, a schedule announced by US special envoy Steve Witkoff. Ukrainian officials have said their forces face severe shortages of Western-supplied air defence interceptors as Russia has intensified missile and drone attacks this year.
