RIYADH — Saudi air defences intercepted and destroyed a drone over the oil-rich Eastern Region early on Saturday, the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen's Houthis said, and drones were also downed over the Southern Region and over the capital Riyadh later in the day, Reuters reported.

Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said in a statement on X that air defences had intercepted and destroyed a "hostile drone" in the Riyadh region, adding that debris from the interception fell without causing injuries, AFP reported. In that statement Malki did not say who had launched the Riyadh drone.

Reuters reported that the coalition attributed the drones over the Eastern Region and the Southern Region to Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis. The Eastern Region is the kingdom's economic powerhouse: it holds the majority of Saudi Arabia's oil and gas reserves and is home to the headquarters of Saudi Aramco, which suffered extensive damage in an attack earlier in October, Reuters said.

A near-daily pattern, and a denial on Friday

Saturday's interceptions follow a similar announcement on Friday, when the coalition said it had intercepted and destroyed a drone launched towards the Medina region. The Houthis later denied carrying out any attack towards Saudi territory on Friday. The group had not claimed Saturday's drones in the reports available at the time of publication.

Cross-border fighting between the Saudi-led coalition, which backs Yemen's internationally recognised government, and the Houthis, who control the capital Sanaa, has intensified amid the US-Israeli war on Iran, opening another front in the wider conflict, Reuters reported.

What is solid

  • The Saudi-led coalition announced the Saturday interceptions over the Eastern Region, the Southern Region and Riyadh, and said debris in Riyadh caused no injuries.
  • The coalition attributed the Eastern and Southern drones to the Houthis, according to Reuters.

What is only claimed

  • Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki did not name who launched the Riyadh drone in his statement on X, AFP reported.
  • The Houthis denied the coalition's account of a separate drone towards the Medina region on Friday.

Why it matters for the Gulf's workers

Saudi Arabia is home to lakhs of Indian workers, including many Punjabis, and the Eastern Region's oil installations sit at the heart of the kingdom's economy. Indian airlines have repeatedly extended suspensions and changes to Saudi flights in recent weeks as the attacks continued, and Saturday's reports indicated no casualties or major damage beyond the falling debris in Riyadh.
