BRATISLAVA — Regional and local elections in Slovakia wrapped up on Saturday evening without any serious incidents, Xinhua reported, in a vote observers regard as an important barometer of public sentiment ahead of the general election, which must take place by autumn 2027. Polling stations opened at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Xinhua reported.

Almost 4.41 million people were eligible to vote across 2,926 municipalities, towns and city districts, according to figures from Slovakia's national news agency TASR cited by EU Today. Voters were choosing mayors, municipal councillors, governors and representatives of Slovakia's eight self-governing regions for four-year terms, and in Bratislava and Kosice also district mayors and councils, EU Today reported.

Early reported results, as summarised by the Slovak Spectator, kept Matus Vallo as mayor of Bratislava, brought a new mayor in Kosice, and saw regional governors retain their seats, with one of the tightest races in the Kosice Region, where incumbent governor Rastislav Trnka narrowly defeated his challenger. No official exit polls were planned, EU Today reported, and the Slovak Statistical Office was to publish results progressively after polls closed, with counting expected to continue overnight into Sunday.

The vote was the first major electoral test of Fico's government since parliamentary disputes weakened his coalition, EU Today reported. An Ipsos survey conducted between 15 and 19 October placed Progressive Slovakia first with 18.6 per cent, marginally ahead of Fico's Smer-SD on 18.4 per cent — a statistically insignificant difference — with the nationalist Republika party third on 10.8 per cent, coalition partner Hlas-SD on 6.6 per cent and the Slovak National Party below the parliamentary threshold, EU Today reported. In Bratislava, Vallo was supported by Team Bratislava, Progressive Slovakia, Freedom and Solidarity and the Democrats, against Transport Minister Jozef Raz, who stood as an independent but is a minister in Fico's government.

What is solid
- Slovakia voted on Saturday in combined municipal and regional elections, with polls opening at 7 a.m. and closing Saturday evening without serious incidents (Xinhua).
- About 4.41 million voters were eligible across 2,926 municipalities, choosing mayors, councillors and leaders of the eight self-governing regions for four-year terms (TASR via EU Today).
- Early reported results kept Matus Vallo as Bratislava mayor, produced a new mayor in Kosice and saw regional governors retain their seats, with Kosice Region's governor Rastislav Trnka narrowly re-elected (Slovak Spectator).
What is only claimed
- What the local results mean nationally is not settled: local contests involve independents and regional alliances that do not map directly onto national party preferences, and the Ipsos national polling lead for Progressive Slovakia over Smer-SD (18.6% to 18.4%) was within the margin of error.
