Women and girls displaced from El Fasher in North Darfur are still living in unsafe conditions with lasting trauma and little support, one year after the city's fall, UN Women said, presenting findings from a survey of 50 women's organizations supporting people displaced from El Fasher at a UN press briefing in Geneva on October 23.

Anna Mutavati, UN Women's Regional Director for East and Southern Africa, said women and girls continued to experience the trauma of sexual violence, the disappearance of family members, loss of livelihoods and severe psychological distress. According to the survey, 49 of the 50 organizations reported signs of psychological distress among displaced women and girls, while 90 per cent said such distress had persisted one year after the violence.

Little mental-health or legal support, UN Women says

Nine in ten organizations described women and girls as living in unsafe conditions, and nearly all reported that many affected women had received no mental health, psychosocial or legal support since fleeing El Fasher, the UN Geneva briefing said. The organizations described families struggling with the effects of sexual violence, missing relatives, killings and the loss of homes and livelihoods, with many women unable to sleep or find the food, water and healthcare they need, Devdiscourse reported in an update on October 26.

UN Women also reported increasing drone attacks across Blue Nile State, Khartoum, West Kordofan, Gedaref State and the Khashm al-Girba area in Kassala State, saying most people killed or injured were women and children, many of whom had already fled violence or were attempting to return home, Devdiscourse reported. Those casualty descriptions are UN Women's account as reported by the outlet and have not been independently verified in this report.
