Russian forces launched a massive overnight drone attack on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy early on Friday, October 23, striking civilian infrastructure in three separate parts of the city, damaging residential buildings and injuring at least two people, Ukrainian authorities reported, according to the Kyiv Post.

Sumy Regional Military Administration chief Oleh Hryhorov said multiple Russian attack drones reached their targets despite Ukrainian defensive efforts. "Tonight, the enemy carried out a massive attack on Sumy using strike drones," Hryhorov wrote on his official Telegram channel. "Unfortunately, some enemy drones reached their targets."

According to Hryhorov, Russian forces struck civilian infrastructure at three locations across the city, including residential areas of the Kovpakivskyi district. At least two residents were injured, with the severity of their wounds still being assessed, and medical personnel and emergency crews were working at the impact sites. The figures were preliminary, the Kyiv Post reported.

Indian broadcaster Mirror Now also reported the overnight drone barrage on Sumy, saying a petrol station was targeted and two workers were injured — a toll consistent with the at-least-two-injured figure reported by Ukrainian authorities.

The Sumy attack was part of a much wider overnight wave. Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 176 strike drones, including 92 jet-powered models, from sites including Bryansk, Kursk, Orel and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, and that air defences intercepted or suppressed 140 of them, 112.ua reported, citing UATV. The attack began at 6 p.m. on October 22 and targeted 19 locations, the report said.

The bombardment came despite Moscow's announcement that it was prepared to resume trilateral negotiations with Ukraine and the United States next month, the Kyiv Post reported. Russia continues to demand that Ukraine withdraw from Ukrainian-controlled areas of the Donetsk region and accept restrictions on its military and Western security relationships — conditions Kyiv has rejected, the report said.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Moscow is taking advantage of slowing deliveries of Western air-defence systems, and Ukraine has repeatedly appealed for additional US-made Patriot interceptor missiles, the Kyiv Post reported. Sumy, a regional capital near the Russian border, has faced repeated drone, missile and aerial bomb strikes throughout the war.
