Tigray rebels on Tuesday claimed to have killed more than 1,500 Ethiopian soldiers in two days of fighting in the northern Tigray region, Anadolu Agency reported. TPLF official Negash Hiluf said Tigray Defense Forces intercepted Ethiopian National Defense Forces troops near Mirena, in central Tigray, as government troops attempted to advance toward the town of Adet, inflicting 1,511 fatalities and wounding 1,050 others on October 17 and 18. Hiluf's remarks came in a video briefing carried by the pro-opposition Tigray Media Corporation, Anadolu reported. The TPLF also claimed to have killed 11 members of the Tigray Peace Force, an armed faction aligned with the federal government.

The casualty figures could not be independently verified, Anadolu Agency said, and neither the Ethiopian government nor the military had publicly responded to the rebel group's claims. The Africa Insight's Sub-Saharan Security Review, summarising the same fighting, noted that a Tigrayan official had claimed over 1,500 government troops killed and assessed the figures were almost certainly exaggerated, while reporting that federal forces had seized the regional capital Mekelle and other towns in a recent counteroffensive and that Prime Minister Abiy unveiled an interim government for Tigray on October 19 with plans for regional elections within six months.

Abiy's warning to Eritrea
Abiy accused Eritrea of supporting Tigray forces seeking to destabilise Ethiopia, Anadolu Agency reported. “I believe that opting to be a host of enemies instead of partner in development is not beneficial. However, the consequence of giving a deaf ear to our calls will be very, very, very severe,” Abiy said in the interview broadcast by the state-owned Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation. He said cooperation offered both neighbours a better future than military confrontation and urged Eritrean authorities to prioritise economic development and peaceful relations. Eritrea's response to the latest warning was not in the reports cited here.
