Hundreds of thousands of households in Ukraine were left without power on Sunday after Russia hit power infrastructure in four Ukrainian regions overnight, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Telegram, according to Reuters.

Zelenskiy named the regions hit overnight as Dnipropetrovsk, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr and Khmelnytskyi, and said the strikes deliberately targeted substations, transformers and power lines that supply homes, Ukrinform reported. Repair crews are working around the clock, he said, but hundreds of thousands of families remain without electricity.
"The intensity of the strikes is very high, and the Russians are seeking to maximally exploit the deficit of ballistic missile interceptors," Zelenskiy said, in remarks carried by Reuters.
This is a new overnight wave, following the strikes reported a day earlier that left more than 280,000 Ukrainian households without power after a combined heat and power plant in Kyiv and substations in the Dnipro region were hit. The target pattern has now widened from the capital and Dnipro to central and western regions as winter approaches.
Over the past week, Russian forces launched more than 3,560 air-to-ground munitions of various types at Ukrainian territory, Zelenskiy said, as he renewed his case that Ukraine urgently needs more air-defence missiles. He said allies had decided this month to allocate new aid packages for Ukraine, including missiles for Patriot systems, Ukrinform reported.
Russia has repeatedly struck Ukrainian energy infrastructure since its full-scale invasion in February 2022, and Kyiv has in turn targeted Russian oil and refinery sites. Moscow's claims and Kyiv's claims in the energy war could not be independently verified in full, and both sides deny deliberately targeting civilians.
Power cuts heading into winter affect heating, water and hospitals for ordinary families far from the front line — and Ukraine's shrinking stock of ballistic-missile interceptors is now the bottleneck Zelenskiy himself is naming in public.
