Three ballistic missiles fired by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis struck Coast Guard facilities in Aden, the southern port city that is the seat of Yemen's internationally recognised government, on Saturday, the government's Interior Ministry said, according to Reuters. Two missiles struck the Coast Guard headquarters within its main compound in the Khormaksar district, while a third hit a building belonging to the Coast Guard in the Tawahi district, the ministry said.

South24 Center, a Yemeni news outlet based in the south, reported the same three impacts and said one of the facilities targeted sits in a densely populated residential area of Khormaksar. Its correspondent reported that two missiles landed in the Old Al-Nasr neighbourhood of Khormaksar, where two powerful explosions were heard before ambulances rushed to the sites, and said the missiles were launched from mountainous areas in the Houthi-controlled Al-Hasha district. The Interior Ministry condemned the attack, saying it threatened public security and vital facilities, and said authorities were collecting evidence, assessing the damage and taking measures to protect residents and public institutions, South24 reported.

The Houthis claimed responsibility. Their military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, said the group had targeted what he described as Saudi enemy troop concentrations at Al-Nasr Camp and the naval military base in Aden, saying Saudi officers were overseeing mobilisation there, Reuters reported. That description of the targets differs from the Interior Ministry's account, which identifies the buildings hit as Coast Guard facilities. There was no immediate comment from the Saudi-led coalition on the Houthi assertion, Reuters said, and no casualty toll was announced in the reporting consulted.

The Aden strikes came on the same Saturday that the Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted Houthi missiles aimed at Saudi cities, in the latest exchange of the renewed fighting that Reuters said has shattered the 2022 UN-brokered truce. That side of Saturday's escalation is reported here: Saudi-led coalition says it intercepted Houthi missiles aimed at Riyadh, Taif and Yanbu

Aden sits on the Gulf of Aden at the mouth of the Red Sea corridor, one of the world's busiest shipping routes, and renewed missile fire into the government-held south is a direct concern for the seafarers and the lakhs of Indian and Punjabi workers across the Gulf whose jobs and remittances depend on the region staying stable. Sources: Reuters and South24 Center, both reporting on Saturday.

What is solid

  • Three ballistic missiles struck Coast Guard facilities in Aden on Saturday — two at the Khormaksar headquarters compound and one at a building in Tawahi — Yemen's Interior Ministry, reported by Reuters and independently detailed by South24 Center
  • The Houthis claimed the attack through spokesman Yahya Saree — Reuters and South24

What is only claimed

  • What was actually targeted: the Interior Ministry says Coast Guard facilities were hit; the Houthis say they aimed at Saudi troop concentrations at Al-Nasr camp and the naval base — the two accounts are reported as stated, and the Saudi-led coalition had not commented on the Houthi assertion in the reporting
  • No casualty or damage toll beyond the ministry's evidence-collection statement had been announced in the reporting consulted
