The incident occurred in Bhovapur village, within the jurisdiction of the Nandgram police station, at around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, when the three women had gone to a field to collect radishes, officials said. They came into contact with a high-tension power line that had snapped and fallen onto the field, and all three suffered severe burns.

The deceased have been identified as Satyavati, 50, and Ruby, 20. The injured teenager, Devshri, 18, remains critically injured and is undergoing treatment in hospital, officials said. Police reached the scene on receiving information and rushed the injured to hospital; the bodies of the two deceased women have been sent for post-mortem examination, and inquest proceedings have been completed.

According to officials, the three were rushed to hospital, where two of them succumbed to their injuries during treatment. The families of the deceased said they cultivate land taken on lease. Grieving family members raised serious questions before the administration and demanded strict action against those responsible for the alleged negligence, asking when the line had broken, how long it had been lying in the field, and why it had not been repaired in time — these are the families' allegations, which the investigation will examine.

ACP (Nandgram) Ziauddin Ahmed said necessary legal action is being taken and that the situation at the scene remains calm. 'A thorough investigation into the entire incident is underway,' he said. The accident has raised serious concerns about the maintenance of power lines and safety protocols for farmers and villagers working in the fields. Sources: IANS (via The Freedom Press); Nation Press.
