Adani Total Gas Limited (ATGL) on Friday, October 23 increased compressed natural gas (CNG) prices by Rs 4.45 per kg in Ahmedabad, taking the retail price in the city to Rs 98.47 per kg — yaani, just short of Rs 100 for every kilo. The company cited a sharp rise in natural gas procurement costs due to elevated global gas prices, reduced domestic gas availability and continued supply curtailments.

The Hindu BusinessLine reported the same Rs 4.45 per kg revision, noting that CNG at ATGL outlets is now priced at Rs 102.60 per kg in Faridabad and Rs 100 per kg in Jalandhar, according to information on the company website. The latest hike comes barely months after ATGL raised prices by Rs 4 per kg in August 2026.

"The CNG price revision is necessitated by a substantial rise in natural gas procurement costs, reflecting elevated global gas prices amid geopolitical developments, lower availability of domestic gas and ongoing supply curtailments. ATGL continues to focus on limiting the impact on consumers while maintaining uninterrupted CNG availability. CNG remains an economical and environmentally friendly fuel choice," an ATGL spokesperson said, as reported by IANS.
According to the company, global spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices have surged from around $10-12 per MMBtu in February 2026 to nearly $30 per MMBtu currently, sharply raising the cost of imported gas. ATGL also pointed to reduced availability of New Well Gas (NWG) and High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) gas, along with continued curtailment of supplies from upstream producers, which has forced it to source gas from alternative and more expensive channels.
What is solid
- ATGL raised CNG prices by Rs 4.45 per kg in Ahmedabad on Friday, to Rs 98.47 per kg (IANS; The Hindu BusinessLine).
- The company attributes the hike to higher procurement costs: spot LNG near $30 per MMBtu versus $10-12 in February, plus reduced domestic NWG/HPHT gas and supply curtailments (company statement via IANS and BusinessLine).
- ATGL also prices CNG at Rs 102.60 per kg in Faridabad and Rs 100 per kg in Jalandhar, per the company website cited by BusinessLine.
What is only claimed
- The Ahmedabad Rickshaw Drivers' Unity Union says drivers effectively pay close to Rs 100 per kg because small cash balances are not always returned at pumps — a claim reported by Divya Bhaskar and not confirmed by ATGL.
- Driver earnings figures of Rs 200-300 a day cited in opposition to the hike are the union's account as reported by Divya Bhaskar, not official data.
The increase has drawn opposition from Ahmedabad's auto-rickshaw drivers, who run largely on CNG. Divya Bhaskar reported that the Ahmedabad Rickshaw Drivers' Unity Union has opposed the hike, with drivers saying the higher fuel cost cuts into daily earnings ahead of the festival season, and union president Vijay Makwana calling for the price to be reduced rather than fares raised.
ATGL is a city gas distributor supplying CNG and piped natural gas across cities in several states, including Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. The company said it remains focused on maintaining uninterrupted CNG availability despite the cost pressures.
