The four states have been locked in a financial dispute for decades over the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Project, covering the sharing of construction costs, interest, compensation for submerged land and rehabilitation expenses. According to Gujarat government figures cited in reports, Rs 7,974.86 crore — yaani about Rs 79.75 billion — was due to Gujarat from the other three states as of July 31, 2025: Rs 5,516.50 crore from Madhya Pradesh, Rs 1,883.84 crore from Maharashtra and Rs 574.52 crore from Rajasthan. Compensation for land and property submerged in Madhya Pradesh due to the dam had also remained a point of contention, with Madhya Pradesh raising a compensation claim against Gujarat.
