On the possible motive, Mahanta said that based on the preliminary investigation, police suspect the incident stemmed from a property dispute related to the lease agreement of Hotel Bilas Inn, between the owner's side and the person who had taken the hotel on lease. He said the accused had taken the hotel on lease. Police stressed the investigation is still at a preliminary stage and that a scientific and thorough investigation is under way; the suspected lease dispute has not been established as the motive.
