Hasimara (Alipurduar), West Bengal: Punjab Police have arrested Rajbir Singh from Hasimara in north Bengal in an espionage case registered at Fazilka, two independent reports said on Friday, October 30. The Times of India reported that Punjab Police arrested him on Thursday, while The Daily Jagran reported that the arrest was made by the Punjab Police State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) team in the Alipurduar district town.

Singh was produced before a court in Siliguri, which granted two days of transit remand allowing the Fazilka police team to take him to Punjab, The Times of India reported. The state counsel at the Siliguri court said the case was registered at Fazilka on October 8 under Sections 3 and 4 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and that police records suggested Singh had been on the run since the case was registered. The counsel added that the investigating team had initially approached airport authorities for Singh's transportation but was asked to obtain a court order first. Jagran reported that Siliguri ACJM court public prosecutor Soumitra Singh Sarkar confirmed Singh was produced before the court on suspicion of ISI links and that permission was granted to take him to Punjab on transit remand.

The allegation, as stated by the state counsel and reported by The Times of India, is that Singh illegally shared classified information and intelligence inputs with Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI over the internet while serving in the Army. Jagran reported the SSOC arrested him on charges of sharing confidential Indian Army information with an ISI handler. These are police allegations; they have not been tested in court and Singh is entitled to the presumption of innocence.

The arrest is the latest step in the case opened on October 8. Earlier reporting on the case, published on October 12, said Punjab Police's Counter Intelligence wing had arrested a woman, Gurnoor Sidhu of Faridkot, after she was apprehended near the Hussainiwala border road, and that two Army personnel — Dilpreet Singh and Rajbir Singh — had been booked in the same case at the SSOC police station in Fazilka under the Official Secrets Act, SSB Crack reported. Jagran reported that the names of Dilpreet Singh and Rajbir Singh surfaced during the investigation of the woman's case, and that a tablet and two mobile phones were seized from her. The two October 30 reports differ on some personal details of the accused, so this story reports only what both agree on: his name, the place and day of arrest, the Fazilka case and the transit remand.

What happens next: Singh is to be brought to Punjab on transit remand, where the SSOC Fazilka investigation will continue. Police have not, in the reports read for this story, disclosed what specific information is alleged to have been passed on, and no court has ruled on the allegations.
