Police in Haryana's Yamunanagar district have registered a case after the driver of a dumper allegedly involved in illegal mining attempted to run over the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Vyaspur, Dr Kuldeep Singh, who narrowly escaped, IANS reported on Monday, November 2. A search has been launched to trace the absconding accused.

According to the SDM's complaint at Sadhaura police station, the incident took place on the morning of October 31. Dr Singh was on his way to the PWD Rest House in Sadhaura at around 6.15 a.m. to participate in the 'Run for Unity' programme when he spotted a dumper truck near the rest house. The dumper had a blurred number plate, and he suspected it was carrying illegally mined material.

When Dr Singh signalled the driver to stop for inspection, the driver allegedly accelerated instead and steered the dumper directly towards him in an attempt to run him over. The SDM narrowly escaped, immediately alerted the police and then chased the vehicle himself, the complaint said.

During the chase, a white car that was allegedly following the dumper tried to obstruct the SDM's vehicle — its driver allegedly drove in a zig-zag manner and braked suddenly to block his path, allowing the dumper driver to escape. Dr Singh reportedly recorded the entire incident on his mobile phone.

Sadhaura police station in-charge Lakhwinder Singh said a case had been registered against the dumper driver and the occupants of the car on the basis of the SDM's complaint, under the relevant sections, and a thorough investigation had been launched. Police are also investigating whether the dumper was carrying illegally mined material and the alleged role of the car's occupants in helping the vehicle escape, and said the accused would be arrested soon.
