Padikkal, who resumed on 56 not out overnight, made 199 off 248 balls with 24 fours and three sixes. CricketAddictor reported he reached his century with a six after lunch and was dismissed ten minutes before tea, caught behind by wicketkeeper Mitchell Hay off fast bowler Zak Gibson.

A dismissal the batter disputed

Reports described the dismissal as controversial: the delivery appeared to be going down the leg side and may have come off the pad, and Padikkal showed visible disappointment, but with no Decision Review System available in the unofficial Test the umpire's decision stood, LatestLY and CricketAddictor reported.

Padikkal shared a 215-run partnership with Sai Sudharsan, who made 91, and added 142 runs for the fifth wicket with Yash Rathod, Yardbarker reported. India A had been bowled out for 113 in their first innings, after which New Zealand A made 317 for a 204-run lead.
