District authorities said the situation was under control and no damage had been reported anywhere in the island chain. As a precaution, tourists and fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea, an official of the District Emergency Operation Centre in Sri Vijaya Puram said. No tsunami warning was reported.

A seismically active zone

The Andaman and Nicobar archipelago sits in a tectonically active zone in Seismic Zone V and experiences frequent seismic activity. Earlier this year, the NCS recorded a magnitude 4.6 earthquake in the Nicobar region in February 2026. Officials said monitoring would continue and further updates would follow if the situation changed.
