Shaikh, who represented India at the 2024 Paris Paralympics and is the country's lone para-cyclist at the ongoing Games in Japan, fell during the men's time trial on Wednesday, landing on his previously operated left residual limb, ANI reported. He has an above-knee amputation of the left leg and relies on a prosthesis.

"Arshad had a fall yesterday during an event due to which he landed on his stump, that is the left stump, and he's been diagnosed with a comminuted displaced subtrochanteric fracture of the left femur, and this cannot be managed conservatively, so it needs a surgical intervention," Kagali told ANI, adding that Shaikh was in good spirits and his vital signs were stable ahead of the surgery.

Speaking earlier to IANS, Kagali said Shaikh slipped during the time trial in Shizuoka on Wednesday night and was taken by the Japanese event medical team to Juntendo University Hospital in Shizuoka. Kagali said he and his team left Nagoya immediately and reached the hospital at 11:30 pm local time, and that scans confirmed a severe break in the upper thigh bone, within 5 cm below the lesser trochanter.

Because the surgeons needed for the procedure were unavailable at the first hospital, Shaikh was shifted to Chutoen Sogo Izu General Hospital, where the operation could be done sooner, IANS reported via Nation Press. He is expected to remain in hospital for about 10 to 14 days after the surgery before any travel plans can be assessed.
