The Delhi Police has transferred the second case registered against Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) activists Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das to its Crime Branch, police sources said, according to reports by ANI and PTI. "The Connaught Place case was transferred to the Crime Branch yesterday, and the second case, pertaining to Jantar Mantar, has also been transferred," the sources told ANI. Other reports said the cases have gone to the Crime Branch's Inter-State Cell for further investigation.
As per the sources cited by ANI, two cases were registered on October 13 following the entry of CJP representatives Ranka and Das into Connaught Place and Jantar Mantar, in connection with what police describe as unapproved entry and protests at the sites. Police allege the group entered the Jantar Mantar area, a day after it was denotified as a designated protest venue; those allegations are yet to be tested in court.
PTI reported that Das and Ranka were produced before a Special Executive Magistrate on October 14 and remanded to judicial custody for allegedly breaching peace bonds, and that their custody was extended by another two days on October 19. ANI reported that the two have now approached the Delhi High Court challenging the October 19 order extending their judicial custody, alleging that their continued detention despite furnishing sureties violates their fundamental right to liberty. According to their legal team, cited by ANI, the proceedings were initiated under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the lawyers contend that the decision to extend their detention was arbitrary and contrary to established legal principles. The CJP has criticised the detention as an attempt to silence dissent — an allegation the party has made in its statements on the case.
