The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has completed 12 consecutive months without a single operational fatality — the first such run in 47 years, Director General G.P. Singh announced on Monday.

Sharing the milestone on X, Singh wrote: “A significant milestone in the history of CRPF — 12 consecutive months (One Year) have passed without any Operational fatality in the force, the last operational fatality in the force being on Oct 30th 2025. This has happened after 47 Years (last such period ended in January 1979).”

The CRPF is India's largest Central Armed Police Force and carries much of the ground burden in Left-Wing Extremism-affected districts, Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast. The fatality-free year comes at a time when Maoist violence has fallen sharply across the country, according to reports of the announcement.

The milestone, however, covers operational deaths only. Suicides by personnel are not counted as operational fatalities, and that remains a serious concern for the force: the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) recently took suo motu cognisance of a media report that 19 CRPF personnel died by suicide in less than five months, between January and May 2026.

According to reported CRPF data cited in the same reports, the force lost 59 personnel to suicide in 2025 — the highest in the last five years — and a total of 281 personnel died by suicide over the last five years, of whom approximately 216 were on duty. The Commission observed in August that the report's contents, if true, raise serious issues regarding the right to life of personnel of the country's largest central armed police force.

Why it matters

A full year without losing a single personnel in operations is a landmark for a force deployed in India's toughest internal-security theatres — but the force's own leadership and rights bodies are clear that the parallel toll from suicides still demands urgent attention.
